squeak

sometimes, i look at my dog while she's squeaking incessantly on a squeaky toy, and i think, 'i know how you feel, yo.'

SOS

the (recently reunited) police are going to be only 175 miles away from nashville at churchill downs on my 25th birthday.

synchronicity, indeed.

deja vu (again)

ok, the weird deja vu radio thing happened again today. i thought of a song and it came on the radio.

i'm officially freaked out.

deja vuing

i've had several moments of deja vu/weirdness lately as it relates to listening to music. observe:

1. heading home from work on tuesday, i heard one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands, 'hungry like the wolf' by duran duran. i happened to look at the clock in my car, to see how early or late i was leaving work: 5:40 p.m. the very next day, as i was driving to memphis, "hungry like the wolf" popped up on my random ipod playlist at exactly 5:40 p.m.

2. i was listening to some 80s tunes on one of the radio stations in memphis yesterday. i turned it on mid-song and at first thought i was listening to "jessie's girl" by rick springfield. i wasn't, but guess what the very next song was? indeed it was "jessie's girl" (i know you may think i've misspelt jessie, but i haven't.)

3. as i was headed back to nashville yesterday, i had the ipod random playlist back on. a poor copy of jimmy buffett's cover of "southern cross" came on and i chose to skip it because, well, it's of poor quality and i do have a better version of it on my playlist which numbers about 540 songs. the next song which popped up (and again, the playlist plays in random order) was the good version of jimmy buffett's cover of "southern cross."

somebody tell me what it all means.

awkwardness

i'm in the middle of watching shopgirl. there's a very short scene that was perfectly done that caught my eye: that awkward moment when you're getting into the passenger seat of the car of someone you haven't known for long -- particularly someone you're on a first date with.

it's one of the most awkward moments i can think of. regardless of if you do or don't like the driver. you're all of a sudden shut inside a tiny capsule with most of your personal space gone. there's little distraction other than the radio. all of a sudden it's you and the other person, and you're going to have to --GASP -- talk.

there's always the awkward getting-in-the-car tango where the driver hastily throws everything piled in the passenger seat area into the back seat while the passenger hovers, waiting for that to all end. then there's the awkward sitting -- you sit about as properly as you'll ever sit, you're certainly not comfortable enough yet to sit as you would prefer, slouched or with your leg tucked underneath you.

contrast that with the comfort and familiarity of getting into your significant other or best friend's car. you take it upon yourself to shove everything out of your way. you sit comfortably. you chatter or you sit quietly without thinking the silence is awkward. it's a nice feeling.

zen

it has been a very beautiful day which turned into an extremely beautiful night. it's one of those day/nights that only happen once in every two blue moons. the humidity which usually runs about 90% this time of year was nonexistant today and the highs, usually in the 90s, barely touched 80.

so, for my zen moment:
i was returning home from the library (where, unfortunately, the two books i wanted were not only checked out, but both had mega-quadruple holds on them). the drive between my library and my apartment involves rolling hills sprinkled with horses, and tonight the sun was setting as i made it. and then on the radio came james taylor's 'fire and rain.'

i looked out the window as he sang 'i've seen sunny days that i thought would never end ...' i think my moments of zen are God's way of reminding me He's paying attention.

synchronicity

when i stopped at the fresh market today, i glanced at my odometer/trip meter, which showed:

trip meter: 232.1
odometer: 23,921

i know stranger things have happened, but it still caught my eye.
