re: monday's 62 across
a 'tennessee gridder' is not an 'oiler' as you have indicated in tuesday's answer box. a 'tennessee gridder' might instead be a titan or a vol(unteer). but a 'tennessee gridder' has not been an oiler since the 1998 season of the national football league.
might i suggest instead for the clue: 'tennessee gridder, once' or 'former tennessee gridder.' had either of these been the clue, i might have figured out _ _ LER = OILER, thus finishing the puzzle.
will shortz would have NEVER made such a mistake.
sincerely,

p.s. thank you for your excellent selection of comics, however.

Thanks! I also have had a problem with "Vols". As a non-sports fan, I needed some help.

(n.) - A person, male or female, who is not very good at solving or completing crossword puzzles.
"Oh, I'm such a crossword klutz! I always start off full of grit and determination, but I always end up giving up before I can finish it. I was not born to be good at crossword puzzles, I guess."
