wasteland

this is a pretty intense way to look at how wasteful we are as a society. i regret i don't know much about the artist or the exhibit, but i gather exploring the effects of a mass consumption through the lens of his camera is chris jordan's life's work.

(thanks to cool people care)

really?

if i had a 'no shit, sherlock' category on this blog, this would instantly become a member:

Heavy-drinking college kids make worse decisions

by the way, bad headline (i'm allowed to criticize, this is from one of my company's main competitors). i believe they intended to say 'heavily drinking,' cause otherwise, they studied a bunch of 'heavy' college kids who like to drink.

doomsday

i meant to post this yesterday, but i forgot:

i didn't know such a thing existed.

but apparently we're all five minutes closer to dying.

dilemma

this is the dilemma to end all dilemmas:

or

the grand finale of project runway and premiere of top chef.

aikening

clay aiken has a new album, apparently.

i just saw a commercial for it on bravotv.

now, i don't and never have watched american idol. so, the only things i know about clay aiken i learned from kathy griffin's stand-up routine. which is to say i had no idea what kind of music he did.

now i know.

the apocalypse

considering the recent developments in the world, i've decided it's time to actually start paying attention to signs of the apocalypse and omens of the end of the world. i noted a few while i was in memphis this week.

on thursday, the day that the government jacked up security measures at airports after the british foiled another terrorism attempt on the u.s., i was headed for the memphis airport for an assignment. the radio played rem's it's the end of the world as we know it. as i was leaving, i heard tom petty's don't come around here no more.

my dad told me while i was there that the last time memphis got rain was the last time i was there: over father's day weekend. while i was in town this week, it began raining thursday evening and didn't stop until friday at lunchtime.

titans

tonight is the first preseason game for the titans. i had several offers to go (going to the titans is like going to your high school football game). i opted out, having been on the road for the past several days. i know how the games go: you go, they lose.

but, while watching the first half on tv, i received three signs that the titans are a changing.
1. tnt is showing remember the titans.
2. titan was an answer in the crossword puzzle i was working.
3. the broadcast included an ad for the nissan titan.

brilliance

mike shannon, stl cardinals play-by-play announcer on tonight's broadcast:

"jason marquis won the silver slugger award last year. that's the award they give to the person with the best batting average in each position in the league.

"they give out nine of those."
